Proxy is short for proxy variable. The word “proxy” is commonly used to describe a stand-in. Hence, “proxy variables” are measurable descriptors which stand in for desired (but unobservable) variables. Some proxies can be transformed through empirical equations into physical or chemical properties such as temperature, salinity, nutrient content. So far data sets have been compiled for surface ocean proxies and deep-ocean proxies.
